Illegal cocktail recipe
Tequila and mezcal cocktail, shaken and served up (no ice, chilled glass). An IBA official cocktail (New Era Drinks).
Ingredients
- 1 oz (30 ml) Espadin Mezcal
- ½ oz (15 ml) Jamaica Overproof White Rum
- ½ oz (15 ml) Falernum
- 1 bar spoon Maraschino Luxardo
- ¾ oz (22.5 ml) Fresh Lime Juice
- ½ oz (15 ml) Simple Syrup
- few drops Egg White (optional)
Method
- Add everything to a shaker with ice and shake hard.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail glass, or over ice in a clay mug.

This recipe uses raw egg. The CDC and USDA warn that raw eggs can carry Salmonella, so pasteurized egg whites are a safer choice, especially for children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a weak immune system.

About the Illegal
The Illegal is an IBA official cocktail. This cocktail is named after the mezcal brand Ilegal Mezcal, which is one of its key ingredients. Mezcal is a type of Mexican distilled spirit made from agave plants, similar to tequila but with a distinct smoky flavor. It is prepared by pouring Mezcal, Jamaican White Rum, Falernum, Maraschino Luxardo, Lime Juice, Simple Syrup, and, optionally, egg white, into a shaker, before shaking the mixture vigorously and serving in a chilled cocktail glass. traditionally, the drink may also be served on the rocks in a clay or terracotta mug.
