How to measure cocktail ingredients
Good cocktails depend on measuring. Eyeballing a pour can change a drink's balance more than swapping a brand.
- Use a jigger. A two-sided measuring cup is the standard bar tool. Pick one that matches the recipe's units.
- Measure everything, including juice and syrup, in the same measure so the proportions stay right.
- Squeeze citrus fresh. Bottled juice tastes flatter. Most recipes assume fresh lemon or lime juice.
- Dashes and bar spoons are approximate: a dash is a quick shake from a bitters bottle and a bar spoon is about a teaspoon.
