What is a standard drink?

In the United States, one standard drink contains 14 grams of pure alcohol (about 0.6 fluid ounces), the amount in 12 oz of 5% beer, 5 oz of 12% wine or 1.5 oz of 40% spirits (NIAAA, CDC).

Many cocktails hold more than one standard drink, because they contain two or more shots of spirit. By our estimates the average of the 102 cocktails here is about 1.3 standard drinks, and the strongest is above 2.8. See the strongest cocktails.

If you are counting drinks, count by alcohol amount, not by number of glasses. Never drive after drinking.
